Rae was inspired to write a villanelle by a story she saw on TV - that of 80-year-old farmer Jeannie Green, who had been farming in the traditional Yorkshire ways for most of her life, and was heartbroken to be told she would have to give up her beloved cattle, as her husband was too ill to care for them properly.
